The Number Resource Organization, or NRO, was created in 2003 to undertake joint activities of the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), including joint technical projects, liaison activities and policy coordination.

The NRO also plays a role in the development of global policies, those policies which have been agreed on by all RIR communities and are globally consistent. More information on how global policies are developed is available on the NRO website.

The only global policy directly dealing with IPv6 concerns the criteria governing the allocation of IPv6 address space from the IANA to the RIRs:
