Policy
IP address policy can have a huge impact on how the Internet industry operates. Whether you operate your own network or are otherwise involved in regulation or development of the Internet, knowledge of the policies that apply in your region is vital, and never more so than now, with the ongoing, industry-wide adoption of IPv6.
Policy Development
The five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) manage the development and maintenance of IP address policy in their regions, but they do not “make” policy. IP address policy is developed by the Internet community in a “bottom-up” manner, meaning that policy is created after the community of Internet stakeholders discussed the policy and reached consensus on it.
By participating in RIR meetings and reading or contributing to mailing lists, you can play a role in the development of IP address policy.
