IP scarcity could hit unwary businesses, says Internet body
16 Mar 2010

The current supply of internet addresses is expected to last only another two years and businesses that are not prepared for it could see their websites affected, says APNIC, the internet body that is responsible for internet address registration and distribution in the Asia Pacific region.

There are about 4 billion internet protocol (IP) addresses under the current set of internet protocols, known as IPv4 and the rapid growth of the internet means that most of these addresses have been used up. The IPv6 protocol was developed ten years ago as a solution to the limited address space and has 340 trillion trillion trillion IP addresses available.
